Welcome to the Australasian Legal Information Institute (AustLII), one of Australia's largest online legal resources. This page contains pointers to the information you are most likely to need when visiting AustLII for the first time.

Finding Legal Information

• Lawyers, Librarians, etc
  You can browse the full list of databases available on AustLII page and then select a specific court, tribunal, journal, law reform or legislation database in which you are interested. Alternatively, you can use the Advanced Search page to search by individual database (eg only High Court decisions), by jurisdiction or by other grouping. If you can not find it on AustLII, try looking in the WorldLII Catalog (includes Australian Law). If you know the name of the document you are after you can use the tables of contents and indices. Otherwise, see Search Help for information on using the AustLII search engine.

• Non-Lawyers, Students, etc
  You may prefer to get background information on the subject in which you are interested from the WorldLII Catalog (especially the Australian Law section for commentaries and summaries). In particular, take note of the materials available under Community Legal Information. You may also be interested in browsing the full list of databases available on AustLII. Introductory information about case law, legislation and other materials may also be helpful. Use the Search Help to get started with the AustLII search engine.

  The News from AustLII newsletter is used to make announcements about new AustLII databases, services and to update the user community on other developments at AustLII.

• AustLII User Guides
  Download and print one of our AustLII User Guides for all the information you need to use AustLII effectively. Documents can be printed and distributed for free to classes and students.

• AustLII Databases
  The starting point for browsing through our materials. Most materials are organised by Australian state. If you are interested in information about a particular subject, you might like to start from the WorldLII Australian Law catalog.

• AustLII FAQ
  AustLII's Frequently Asked Questions (and answers). If you have a question it may have already been answered -- check it here.

• Feedback
  How to contact the site maintainers to give feedback or ask questions. This page also has pointers to useful help pages. Please note that AustLII cannot provide legal advice and that we do not have the resources to conduct legal research for you.
